FDA Lifts Ban on Silcone Implants After 14 Years
11/21/2006
Silicone has become synonymous with breast augmentation. However, many people will probably be surprised to know that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration put a ban on the use of silicone implants in 1992 due to accusations that leakage from these implants caused cancer, auto-immune disease, and connective tissue disorder. For 14 years silicone implants were put on the shelf and surgeons were forced to turn to saline filled implants. While these implants carry fewer safety concerns many women (and men) complain that they don't maintain the feel of natural breasts. This complaint has led many U.S. women over the Atlantic Ocean to England where silicone implants have always been legal.
The good news is that women seeking breast augmentation with silicone implants can now put their plane ticket money towards their surgery. After 14 years, the FDA has made the decision to make silicone implants legal again for use in breast augmentation.
The decision comes with instructions for silicone implant manufacturers. To ensure the continued saftey of implants, the FDA will have these companies study 40,000 women recieving silicone breast augmentation for 10 years.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons released a statement expressing their approval of the FDA's decision. After years of inconclusive studies, they say, the FDA is finally letting women take advantage of all that medical science has to offer.
